Ghana Olympic Committee Women’s Commission Sets Bold Agenda for Gender Equity
ACCRA – The Women’s Commission of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), in its quest towards a definitive shift toward institutionalizing gender equity and inclusivity within the nation’s sporting landscape, has held a strategic meeting after the launch of the GOC strategic and development plan for 2025–2029.
The commission, comprised of a "who’s who" of esteemed female sports leaders, is tasked with a clear mandate to bridge the gender gap and ensure sustainable sports development through effective governance and female empowerment.
The meeting proposed a quotation system, a tracking mechanism designed to monitor women’s representation across all levels of sports administration. The initiative seeks to move beyond symbolic participation, ensuring that women hold influential "seats at the table" where critical decision-making occurs.
In addition to structural changes, the commission identified capacity building as a top priority. They resolved to equipping women with specialized leadership skills and technical knowledge and to create a pipeline of female executives capable of driving progress within various sporting federations.
The meeting also addressed the financial disparities facing female athletes and the need for parity in how athletes are rewarded for national service and a gender inclusion policy incorporating best practices from around the world for the approval of the GOC, on the minimum percentages of women on committees.
The GOC Women’s Commission will institute a mentoring program to inspire, educate, encourage, and support women aspiring for leadership positions by sponsoring selected and qualified females for inclusion in Federation’s technical training and programs.
The GOC Women’s Commission plans to engage a broad coalition of stakeholders, including Government agencies and policymakers, National sports federations, International athletic partners.
The GOC Women’s Commission is made up of Chairperson Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, as chairperson, Mrs. Joyce Mahama, Madam Elizabeth King, Helena Williams, Christiana Ashley, Delphina Quaye, Rafatu Inusah, Vivian Dougblor, Cathrine Tukpe and Phillipina Frimpong as the coordinator.
