Armwrestling wins 55 medals in Africa Championship

Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee has commended the national armwrestling team, Golden Arms for their impressive performance at the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Abuja, Nigeria.

The team has gradually become one of Ghana's best national teams and they continue to maintain that standard in every competition they participate in, he said

Ghana, a dominant force on the continent, secured third place after clinching 55 medals across the left and right arm events, raising their tally to 405 international medals in 20 championships since 2016.

The GOC President noted that the team’s recent performance at the just-ended African Championship in Nigeria reflects the hard work and dedication the athletes have consistently demonstrated over the years.

He stated that the team’s recognition at the 13th African Games in Accra spoke volumes about their potential when given the necessary support.

He mentioned that the GOC would soon engage the International Olympic Committee and other stakeholders to explore the proper procedures for including lesser-known sports like Armwrestling in future Olympic Games.

Mr. Akpokavie praised the team’s performance at the championship and encouraged them to go for gold as Ghana gears up for the upcoming World Championship in Bulgaria.

The GOC President voiced confidence in the team’s ability to secure more medals at the global event, commending Grace Mintah’s historic feat as the first African woman to win a world gold medal in Armwrestling.

Ghana’s Golden Arms have chalked remarkable successes in Africa, from hosting and dominating championships, to grooming emerging talents, and maintaining a consistent spot among Africa’s elite contenders.
