ACCRA - The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana (CGA), Mr. Richard Akpokavie, has expressed profound gratitude to GCB Bank PLC for its pivotal support of Team Ghana during the recently concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Speaking during a high-level courtesy call on the Board Chairman of GCB Bank PLC, Professor Joshua Alabi, by the leadership of the GOC/CGA, Mr. Akpokavie highlighted that the bank’s well-timed corporate sponsorship served as a major catalyst for the country’s terminal preparation and overall logistics for the Games.
Mr. Akpokavie noted that beyond the financial backing, the presence of GCB Bank's marketing team in Glasgow added immense value through engaging, interactive sessions with Ghanaian athletes and officials.
"The support from GCB Bank went a long way to make Team Ghana’s stay in Glasgow a resounding success. Our wish is that this marks the beginning of a long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationship that gives us the platform to market GCB across all national sports federations and showcase how the bank is actively driving national development through sports." Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of GOC/CGA.
Receiving the delegation, Board Chairman Professor Joshua Alabi thanked the GOC and CGA leadership for the rare show of institutional appreciation.
Prof. Alabi, a seasoned sports enthusiast and chair of his political party’s sports manifesto committee, underscored his deep familiarity with the Ghanaian sports ecosystem and expressed optimism for forward-thinking national sports policies.
"We have been supporting various sports initiatives over the years, but you are the only organization that has taken the step to return and say thank you. This thoughtful gesture shows you truly recognize the impact of GCB's contribution, and it gives us the energy to do even more." - Prof. Joshua Alabi, Board Chairman, GCB Bank PLC.
Prof. Alabi reassured the Commonwealth and Olympic movement that GCB Bank PLC remains committed to supporting national sports development as part of its corporate mission, urging sports administrators and federations to actively advocate for GCB’s banking services to attract sustained investment into sports.
